Detecting a goal post 25 yards away


I am working on a senior design project on a budget ($500) where I need to kick a 25 yard (~22 m) field goal which is 10 feet long and 20 feet wide with bright yellow reflective tape for color detection.

My question is if I can use a Charmed Labs Pixy 2 CMUcam5 Image Sensor to detect this from that far away?

Considering the robot is placed on the hash - marks, the goal is to use these sensors to detect which side of the center line it is on and then turn accordingly.


I’m not sure. But if you have flexibility on how large the color “tag” is for your goal, Pixy2 can detect objects arbitrarily far away – it just becomes a matter of making your tag large enough to be detected at the desired distance.
